蜜蜡为非晶质体。部分组织较疏松而又不含其他矿物的蜜蜡能浮于水。蜜蜡摩擦产生静电荷，能吸附纸片、铁屑等轻微物品，部分不摩擦亦带有静电荷，握之有“啜手”的感觉。蜜蜡是有机矿物，质地脂润，色彩缤纷，用途广泛，价值超卓，与其他自然宝石一样，享有“地球之星”的美誉。蜜蜡蕴含无数的色彩，有的透明晶亮，有的半透明，有的不透明但色纹斑斓。透明的若再加上光线照射，往往有多种色彩显现。
